Matt has more than 15 years of experience providing financial advisory, restructuring and turnaround services to large and middle market companies and their stakeholders. Matt’s practice has primarily focused on assisting companies stabilize operations, improve performance and explore strategic alternatives. Matt also has significant experience assisting clients with acquisition due diligence for distressed target companies, business assessment and plan development, development and implementation of restructuring initiatives and assisting companies in Chapter 11 and out-of-court restructurings.
Matt has served as Chief Restructuring Officer (“CRO”) and in lead restructuring advisory roles for distressed or underperforming companies in a wide range of industries including Construction, Consumer Products, Equipment Leasing, Industrial Manufacturing, Professional Services, Restaurant, Retail and Travel & Hospitality.
Matt’s CRO experience includes an engagement for a commercial printer serving the print media and educational industries. Negatively impacted by the downturn in print media, the engagement included an assessment of the company’s financial performance, development of customer rationalization and facility consolidation plans and ultimately facilitation of the successful sale of the business in Chapter 11. Matt also acted as the CRO for a multi-faceted consumer packaging company operating four distinct business units. Matt led the financial and operational assessment and development of strategic alternatives, which ultimately led to the divesture of one of the business units and the successful restructuring and recapitalization of the balance of the company.
Recently, Matt served as the lead engagement partner for a national heavy equipment leasing company experiencing challenges from an extended downturn in both oil and gas and transportation construction markets. The engagement included a business plan assessment, identification of core and non-core assets, development of an operational restructuring plan and evaluation of strategic alternatives. The business was ultimately marketed extensively resulting in a successful sale as a going-concern.
Matt also served recently as the lead engagement partner for a $6 billion engineering and construction company facing liquidity issues and concerns over the potential breach of credit agreement covenants. The engagement included the assessment of financial projections, development of working capital improvement opportunities and constructing bridge financing strategies.
Matt has considerable experience in Travel & Hospitality including serving as the lead engagement partner for a national rental car company to provide financial and operation due diligence for the Debtor in Possession (“DIP”) Lender and Stalking Horse bidder. The engagement included an assessment of the business outlook, funding requirements, determination of core and non-core locations, development of auction strategies and preparation of a 100 day plan for all post-closing requirements. This resulted in the client being selected as the winning bidder at auction, a timely transaction closing and a seamless transition of operations to the new entity. Matt also served as lead engagement partner in the restructuring of a niche cruise operator. The engagement included the development of business and restructuring plans, liquidity management and implementation of various operational initiatives resulting in securing new capital and a successful out-of-court restructuring of the balance sheet.
Matt’s consumer products experience includes leading the engagement for a building products company specializing in closet doors, wall décor, systems and hardware and fabricated glass. The engagement included a business plan assessment, preparation of a facility consolidation plan and the development of balance sheet restructuring alternatives which ultimately led to marketing the business for sale as a going concern. Although the sale proceeds resulted in a deficiency to the second lien lenders, the transaction was effectuated out of court with 100% stakeholder approval.
Prior to joining Mackinac Partners, Matt was a Managing Director in Deloitte’s Corporate Restructuring Group. He was also a Partner at CRG Partners prior to their acquisition by Deloitte.
Matt earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Massachusetts. He is a former board member of the Northeast Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association, as well as a member of the Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Advisors.View Other Professionals
